Biblical Botox – Being a Leaf That Does Not Wither!

Psalms 1:2-3
“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law, he meditates day and night. And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither; and whatever he does, he prospers.”

I have often commented to people who say I look younger than my age that God is the best anti-aging drug on the market. Imagine my surprise when I read Psalms 1:3 and realized this passage confirms this to be true. Before you say I am reading too much into this Scripture, I challenge you to compare a green leaf to one that is withered. Which leaf would you rather look like? David uses a vivid word picture in this verse to help us understand the benefits of being rooted in the Word of God.

Being a leaf that does not wither does not change with the seasons, nor does it disconnect from the tree and fall to the ground. It remains connected and continually takes in what it needs to stay healthy and vibrant. So, it is for the Christian who is attached to Christ (the vine). John 15:5 promises that “if we abide in Him and He abides in us, we will bear much fruit.”

A Divine Challenge

Notice, however, that in Psalm 1 and John 15:5, the requirement for being a leaf that does not wither is…ABIDING IN HIM. How do we do that? Psalms 1:2-3 give us the divine ingredients for Biblical Botox. First, “his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law, he/she meditates day and night.” Notice that Psalms 1:2 doesn’t say to read for 15 or 20 minutes daily in the morning/evening, so we can check it off our Christian things-to-do list. It calls us to meditate (think deeply or contemplate) on the law, day and night, which means continually.

Second, we are to drink in its truth like plants drink in sunlight and water, “he/she will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water.” When a tree takes in these things, it is nourished and bears fruit that others benefit from. It also gives life-giving oxygen that sustains us as human beings. This same thing is true for us, as believers. When we drink in the truths of Scripture, our lives also bear fruit that benefits us and others in ways that give life and hope to a lost and dying world that desperately needs God.

Call to Action

Unlike the worldly Botox that provides temporary youth benefits, only the rich can afford. Biblical Botox is free to anyone who hungers and thirsts for God’s righteousness. So, if you want to keep your leaf from withering, revitalize your life with the Word of God, and see if God doesn’t keep His promise. Father, the promises in Your Word are true! Instead of being conformed to the things of this world that steal our joy, kill our spirit, and destroy our relationship with You and one another. Help us meditate on Your Word as a life-giving source for personal transformation both inside and out. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray, Amen!
