The God-Shaped Hole in the Human Heart

“And wherever He entered, into villages, or into cities, or into the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and besought Him that they might touch if it were but the border of His garment: and as many as touched Him were made whole.”
A Divine Revelation
Just like the crowds during this time of Jesus’ ministry, The shovels of abuse, neglect, addiction, health issues, job-related stress, civil unrest, broken lives, and broken marriages, etc. have created a hole in the human heart that cries out to be filled. This huge hole in many of us has left us feeling empty and hopeless. We reach out to one another for fulfillment, but we only find that those around us are just as empty and have no more to give than we do. We look for material things or earthly successes to somehow fill the void. Yet worldly success rarely makes even a dent in filling our holes.
My hole, as a young person, was the size of the Grand Canyon and everywhere I looked and everyone I looked to only had shovels ready to dig away another piece of me. So, let me ask you, “How big is your hole, and who holds the shovels in your life?”
The people in Mark’s time were just as empty as we are today. They probably had looked to others to fill their holes and were just as disappointed as we are now. Then Jesus came onto the scene. He was different! He wasn’t like the Roman leaders, reaching out with the long arm of authority into the shallow pockets of the people to take what they didn’t have to give (sounds like many in our government). He wasn’t like the Pharisees or religious leaders using guilt and condemnation to hollow out the hearts of the Jewish people, all the while elevating themselves and their religiosity before men (sounds like many in our churches). He was wholly available, wholly humble, and wholly compassionate to the needs of those around Him.
When He touched people, they were made whole. He not only made people physically whole but emotionally and spiritually whole as well. When the adulterous woman and the woman at the well met Jesus, they found forgiveness and an unconditional love they had never known before. Even the hole in Mary and Martha’s hearts at the loss of their brother was made whole again when Jesus resurrected Lazarus from the dead. In His final act on the cross, He bore the whole weight of our sin onto Himself to forgive us and make us wholly His.
A Divine Challenge
So, are you ready to give Him the hole in your life so He can make you whole again? He filled the Grand Canyon-sized hole in my life, and I know He can fill your hole if you let Him.
